Women in Data Science: meet Indicium professionals
It is more specifically about women in data science that we want to talk about this International Day of Women and Girls in Science. The technology market is booming and the opportunities are endless, but not so much for women.
Even outside of this equation, they have little representation, and Indicium has been going against this tide to do something different, encouraging the participation of girls and women in the area of data sciences .
Let's explain this scenario, which persists 😓, and tell you what we are doing at Indicium so that more girls and women enter and develop professionally in this space that is still largely male.
Shall we turn this key? Good reading!
International Day of Women and Girls in Science - who created this date?
The International Day of Women and Girls in Science is a UNESCO initiative and was approved by the United Nations (UN) General Assembly in 2015.
With the aim of acting to promote equality especially in the areas of science , technology , engineering and mathematics , this is yet another movement to raise awareness among all people and increase the participation of women in these areas.
After all, we still perpetuate the discourse that technology (and data science ) positions are for men so that women do not get involved in these professions. Yes, that happens.
Need to have a special day for women and girls in Science?
It is necessary because the search for equity within the labor market is still very necessary. And unfortunately this is nothing new.
In the area of technology , for example, where there is so much talk about innovation , inequality prevails. 37% of women earn 34% less than men.
It is important to realize that there is a lack of female representation since training, and this is a perspective that also strengthens the false understanding that a certain area of activity is not for women.
Here at Indicium, we understand this date of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science as being very necessary, as both our data science area and the tech market as a whole still have this same profile to change .
And it will change, because the prospects are good and we can prove it.
Within ten years, according to the Institute for Applied Economic Research (Ipea) , the participation of girls and women in the Brazilian labor market should grow more than men's in many segments, including science and technology .
We believe that a major lever for this estimate of female participation growth is the current technological blackout.
With this, we see the light at the end of the tunnel! 💡
More women and girls in data science
The technological blackout is a current-day phenomenon that arises from the lack of qualified labor to meet a demand that is growing unchecked: the digitalization of companies and people .
The Covid-19 pandemic has everything to do with this scenario, as, despite the increase in unemployment levels, digitalization was literally forced and caused the technology sector alone to open around 60,000 more jobs in 2020 than in 2019. .
And the Brazilian Association of Information and Communication Technology Companies ( Brasscom ) estimates that, in three years, this market will require around 800 thousand more professionals .
Do you realize that it is time and turn for us to have more female participation in data science ?
If we open the doors for more girls and women to pursue a profession in the technology field as a whole, we will balance this equation.
It is worth mentioning in our conversation that female professionals in the information technology (IT) area currently have a higher level of education than men in the same sector in Brazil. However, even so, they earn 34% less than them, according to data from IBGE .
In other words, the scenario is still very sexist, but it also offers many opportunities.
Data science: the professional girls and women at Indicium
It is more specifically about women in data science that we want to talk about this International Day of Women and Girls in Science. The technology market is booming and the opportunities are endless, but not so much for women.
They still have little participation, and Indicium has been working hard to make things different, encouraging more and more girls and women to enter the data sciences field so we can turn this key around!
The market demands talent, regardless of gender, right!?
With this in mind, we encourage female performance at all hierarchical levels at Indicium .
And you will now meet some of the professional women who bet on themselves, overcame several barriers and literally got here, being part of this text, where they leave a very special message for girls and women .
"I joined Indicium in March 2019 because I saw an opportunity: combining my training in economics with the world of technology that was already and continues to rise. It was a bet that paid off very well, because I started as a data analysis intern and today I am techlead from the special business vertical , data scientist and analytics engineer .
Girls and women who want to start need to have the courage to take risks and try something new, not be afraid of making mistakes, and make themselves available to learn and develop while working. We are conditioned to feel very insecure about our abilities, which limits us. I believe we need to change this. And Indicium is a great place to start. 😉"
I started my journey in 2020, looking for new areas of professional interest and, as there were several people from the economy entering the data area , I decided to start studying to see if I liked it, and it was worth it! :)
I started with free courses and study groups at college. And for a girl or woman who wants to start, I suggest looking for areas that interest you, looking at the job openings that are being offered to see what is required in them and seeking knowledge based on that."
"Since I was a child, I've always been curious about how nature works, which is why I made the unusual choice of studying physics. After graduating, I started working with technology , and no one can deny that this is the future.
Today, I'm a project manager at Indicium , I work with planning and managing teams and tasks, I love it and I intend to specialize more and more.
I never understood why exact science careers are seen as predominantly male . Women are more detail-oriented, determined, multitasking and empathetic, characteristics that make them brilliant professionals.
One tip I give to anyone who wants to start their career in data is not to give up. Someone may try to discourage you, but you need to be the first to believe in yourself.
Do you want to grow professionally and be aligned with the most technological developments in the world? Consider building a career in the world of data . Invest in yourself, study, prepare. The future is now, you go girl! ❤️"
"I joined Indicium and the technology area in June 2021, after going through Indicium Academy, when I was still working at another company. I believe that the future of activities in general lies in data and its analysis.
Increasingly using data to generate business intelligence will be the key to success. Today, I am a trainee as an analytics engineer and am on my third project, and I am also a tutor at Indicium Academy , where I graduated.
For girls and women who want to enter the world of data science and analytics , my tip is to have courage, because sometimes it is really challenging, and boldness, because this is still a mostly male world."
"I have always identified with the world of numbers, logic and construction based on this. That was the reason I entered civil engineering, which later opened doors to the analytical area .
Today, at Indicium , I work as an analytics engineer , a role that addresses several fronts, from understanding the business, data transformation to visualization and analysis.
If I can leave one tip for women and girls who are interested in embarking on this journey, it is that there are many possibilities for growth, areas for improvement and many spaces to occupy!"
It’s time for girls and women to enter data science
If you are a girl or woman and want to enter this universe, you need to know about Indicium 's projects that aim to both increase female participation in data science and combat the technological blackout: the Indicium Academy and Lighthouse .
There are two professional education programs in the data area that train a super-qualified workforce for the fastest growing market in the world: data science and analytics .
- Both open the doors for people to develop and soon get a job opportunity right here at Indicium or at our partner companies.
- And both are completely connected with the principles that drive this rocket called Indicium to achieve all our goals, which includes diversity .
But applications for both projects are still mostly male.
We are an innovation company and we want to break down barriers through knowledge shared equally with everyone.
And to expand the female presence in the data science and analytics market , we invite you to learn about our projects.
- Indicium Academy - is our data education platform for those who already have some foundation. Registration is open for Training in Analytics Engineering and, for women , we have a 20% discount coupon on the current price. Just fill out the registration form with the code MULHERINDICIUM . Our content is exclusive and entirely in Portuguese, we have live classes and tutorials with our team of experts, and we give you all the support you need to learn from end to end how to plan and execute an analytics project .
- Lighthouse - is our program for internship and trainee positions, that is, for those who are starting their professional journey. It lasts six months and welcomes students or people with up to 3 years of training who want to build a career in the data area. To encourage the entry of more girls and women , we have a vacancy reservation policy and we are planning a selection process that will be exclusively for them .
Women and girls in science, we still have a lot of struggle...
“ It would be much faster to fill a vacancy if we only looked at white men and engineers. So, all links in the hiring chain need to feel responsible for looking at diversity and increasing the presence of underrepresented groups ”, was what Flavia Garcia, Google's diversity manager for Latin America and Canada, said.
And we signed below!
Therefore, our efforts for equity within the data market will continue until we get to where we want and should be.
And the International Day of Women and Girls in Science is more than important to remember the constant challenge faced by women and girls to break down barriers, change paradigms and continue combating gender inequality, including in science and technology.
In the end…
- Only 35% of the female workforce occupy the highest-paying leadership positions in technology companies (Brasscom).
- only 14% of programmers in Brazil are women ( Catho ).
- the vast majority of women are still in lower paid positions, such as help desk attendants (Brasscom).
If you are a girl or woman and want to start a career in data science with a bang , remember: registration for the Indicium Academy is open and, for women , we have a 20% discount coupon on the current price .
Just fill out the registration form with the code MULHERINDICIUM .
Turning the key is the way. Come with Indicium to raise this flag!
